2008 SAYLOR REUNION
SATURDAY JULY 12, 2008
| LEARNED |
This is my tenth edition of “Learned”.
In 1999, I reported 16, 800 family members in my computer database. That
number is now at 24, 900.

SAYLOR
DNA
PROJECT |
Last year I mentioned the work compiled by H. Barney Sayler. I am
now working to copy all of his letters and his extraordinary
notebook loaned to me by his family. It is a much bigger project
than I expected; but, the material is extremely interesting.
Are we related? Apparently no.
H. B. Sayler’s family does not share matching Y-DNA based upon a
test submitted by a descendant that can trace his ancestry to the
second of the “Two Jacobs”.
H. B. Sayler’s family traces their line to what I call the “second”
of the Two Jacobs and is shown by the testing reported in Group 4.
The Y-DNA test for my SAYLOR line is reported in Group 1 and should
be the DNA for what I call the "first" of the Two Jacobs.

ANOTHER
STEWART
SAYLOR |
The name “Stewart” in our branch
of the tree begins with Stewart Cleveland Saylor (JAN
1890 – 1938).
I’m not aware of the source for it’s use.
Any ideas?
Hilary Keith Schroder and Cathy (Thorn) Schroder found my web site and
told me about another Stewart Saylor (JAN
1848 – 1936) in their family. Their Stewart was also born in PA.
He was a Private in the 184th Reg. PA Infantry and captured
22 JUN 1864 and imprisoned at Andersonville
until 01 APR 1865. In the 1920 census for
Huntingdon County,
PA Stewart is
listed as a retired Railroad engineer. We do not have a paper trail
connecting the two families. DNA testing will tell if we are related. I
was born JAN 1946,
apparently a good month.

SMITH’S
STORE |
|
If you are in my generation, you will
have fond memories of visiting Mom Saylor in Berlin almost every Sunday afternoon. Those
visits usually included at trip to Smith’s Store for some
candy or ice cream. That’s the same store that uncle Elbert
later purchased from Herbert Smith. What you may not know is
that Herbert Smith’s grandmother was Elizabeth (Saylor)
Smith. Elizabeth
was a first cousin of our Stewart Cleveland Saylor so Elbert
Saylor and Herbert Smith were second cousins once removed.
Elizabeth and her husband Harvey Smith owned the farmhouse
that I currently own in Northampton Township.
Herbert’s son, Paul, is married to Dorothy (Suhrie) Smith.
Dorothy is currently visiting my mother, Dorothy, twice a
week to make her days pleasant and her spirits high. Dorothy
Smith’s son Jeffery worked with my brother, Chris, at Rigg’s
Industries. Chris Saylor and Jeffery Smith are third cousins
twice removed.

LINCOLN’S
COTTAGE |
|

If you are planning a trip to Washington, DC,
I have two additional stops for your visit.
First, is President
Lincoln’s Cottage (see:
www.lincolncottage.org). The Cottage was recently restored
and pictured above. The story of Lincoln at the Cottage
is well told in two books,
Lincoln’s Sanctuary
by Matthew Pinsker and
Lincoln’s Other White
House by Elizabeth Smith Brownstein. From the online
Cottage fact sheet, “The first designated National Cemetery
is adjacent to the Soldier’s Home and was in Lincoln’s clear view. More than 5,000 were
buried there during the Civil War. It was after this cemetery
reached capacity that
Arlington
National
Cemetery
was established.”
Second, is the first
designated National Cemetery,
now the US Soldier’s and Airemen’s
Home
National
Cemetery, mentioned above as
adjacent to the Cottage and located at 21 Harwood Road, NW. Here you will want
to find the headstone of Peter Saylor, my great-great
grandfather, located in Section G, # 4156, pictured below. Peter
Saylor was Elizabeth (Saylor) Smith’s grandfather and also the
grandfather of Stewart Cleveland Saylor. Peter enlisted 25 OCT
1862 in the 161st Volunteer Regiment, 16th
PA Cavalry and died of Tuberculosis 5 NOV 1863.
